Les Rencontres d'Arles 2009
Rise at 7.30am Left them both in bed and went to register at the main Rencontres office at Rue Docteur Fontane. Picked up a weeks pass for €40 end then went to check out whether Frida would have to pay anything at the main ticket office in L'Espace Van Gogh.
Beautiful square and gardens surrounded by photographic secondhand book stalls.
Took in the Robert Delpire exhibit whilst I was there, a Paris publisher, married to Sarah Moon, responsible for publishing so many great works of 20th Century Photography including the original 1959 publication of Robert Frank’s ‘The Americans’.
Return to les Rosiers, doesn’t look like Dinu and Frida have been up long, prepare some eggs for a tuna nicoise and a glass of wine and take in another hour by the pool.
Dinu has to be back at the space on the rue Raspail for 4.00ish for a pre-private view for education officer from the Photographers Gallery in London.
We drop him off and Frida and I head for the main venue at Les Ateliers, the old Gare SNCF good sheds which make up the main exhibition venue of the whole week.
About a dozen shows were centred around the Ateliers, Brian Griffin, Matrin Parr, Nan Goldin... and one of the main shows curated by Nan Goldin called the friends of Nan Goldin.... an impressive show included was Eugene Richard's "Blue Room"
We take our car back into town as I want to be at the theatre d’antiques for the evening presentation so we grab a quick cheap pizza and then head to the venue and join the queue.
Photography does now seem to have achieved rock and roll status - it’s like queuing for a concert... must be somewhere between 1000-2000 people for tonight.
The Oskar Barnack Price, the HCB Prize and a presentation by Vanity Fair, who seem to be the main sponsor for the evening.
Pick Dinu up - he’s walked back half way to the Rosiers and we meet him on the road... get back and have a glass of wine for a night cap and talk photography til about 2.30-3.00am - it’s been another long day but nice to spend some time with D - we seem to go ages without seeing each other, nice to catch up rather than by email. Sleep beckons.
